The sun goes down over Uluwatu at about a quarter past six, give or take twenty minutes across the year, and for that half hour the whole peninsula points west. Scooters come up from the beaches, the cliff bars fill from five, and a thousand people who have never met stand along the same limestone edge and go quiet at the same moment. It is the best free thing on this island and the most oversold at the same time.
The trouble is that almost every sunset list here is written by someone who never ate. You get eleven viewpoints, a cocktail photograph and no idea where dinner is. And almost every food list is written by someone who never looked up. So this one does both: where the light actually is, which of those places can feed you, and where to go at eight when the cliffs have emptied and everyone is stuck in the same queue of scooters heading north.

Between about ten to six and half past six, all year round. Bali sits eight degrees off the equator, so unlike Europe the time barely moves between seasons: the earliest sunsets are in June and July, the latest in January and February, and the whole swing is under an hour.
That has one practical consequence everyone learns the hard way. Be in place by five. Not for the sun, for the parking and for somewhere to stand. The cliff bars start turning people away from about half four on a Sunday, and the viewpoints fill from five.
And do not leave when the sun touches the water. The sky over the Bukit usually goes deep orange and then a strange purple for ten or fifteen minutes afterwards, and that is regularly better than the sunset itself. Half the crowd misses it walking back to the scooters.
Is the best sunset in Bali in Uluwatu?
Mostly, yes, and for one boring geographical reason: the Bukit is the only part of the island where the land is high and the water is open at the same time. Everywhere else you are watching the same sun from sea level.
Tanah Lot is the postcard, and it is genuinely beautiful, but it is ninety minutes north and you will share it with the coaches. Canggu and Berawa put the sun down at the end of a flat beach with a beer in your hand, which is a fine evening and not a view. Seminyak is the same thing with a higher bill. Jimbaran is the best of the low ones: flat water, grilled fish, no stairs. Nusa Penida and the Gilis beat all of it and cost you a day of travel.
So if you are asking where to watch sunset in Bali and you have one evening, the honest answer is the Bukit: a limestone cliff seventy metres up with nothing between you and the horizon. Which one of the twenty-two below depends on whether you want it free, with a cocktail, or with dinner.

No cover, no minimum spend, no table you have to buy. Bring a torch for the walk back: the light goes fast here and most of these paths have none.
1. Karang Boma Cliff – Pecatu
The one people mean when they say the Uluwatu cliffs. A bare limestone headland with the ocean on three sides and the coastline running off into haze, no railing worth the name and nothing built on it. It is open at any hour and it costs nothing, which on this peninsula is increasingly unusual. Come at five, walk out past the first crowd, and there is still empty edge to sit on. The drop is real and unfenced; nothing you can photograph from the lip is worth it.

2. Batu Jaran – Pecatu
Horse Rock, and the quieter twin of Karang Boma. Park by the lighthouse and walk five minutes south down the tree-lined path: the view from the actual point is a different thing to the view from the car park, and most people never make the walk. A seventy-five metre drop with no fence along most of it, so keep back from the edge and keep children close. Free, and nobody has ever asked us for parking money. About half an hour by scooter from Balangan.

3. Uluwatu Temple – Pecatu
The sunset with a soundtrack. Pura Luhur Uluwatu sits on the cliff at the very tip of the peninsula and the kecak dance runs in the open amphitheatre as the sun drops behind the performers, which is either the most beautiful hour on the island or the most crowded, depending on how you feel about a full house. Gates until seven. Book the kecak ahead in high season, keep your sunglasses in your bag, and do not carry anything loose: the monkeys here are professionals.

4. Suluban Beach – Uluwatu
Sunset through the cave mouth. You come down the stairs, through the limestone gap and out onto the sand between the rocks, and the light comes at you through the opening rather than from above. Photographers know this one. Tide decides everything here: at high water the sand goes and you are standing on wet rock, so check before you commit to the stairs. Warungs on the way down for a beer while you wait.

5. Bingin Beach – Bingin
Where the surfers watch it. A long staircase down the cliff, warungs stacked into the rock on the way, and a reef that turns gold when the light goes flat. The sunset here is watched from a plastic chair with a Bintang rather than from a rooftop, and it is better for it. Loungers on the sand are paid, like everywhere on this coast. The climb back up is the price.

The easy one. Wide sand, gentle enough water, and a set of stairs that is long but nothing like Bingin. It faces the right way and it stays quieter than the famous names, largely because it has no bar with a sign on the main road. Bring what you want to drink.

A view with a chair under you. Not a beach and not a bar: a small cafe on the Ungasan side of the peninsula with the drop in front and prices that will not make you flinch, open until ten. The right answer on an evening when you want to sit down and not perform.

The other coast, and the only flat one. Jimbaran faces west across the bay rather than out into open ocean, so the sun goes down over water with the airport lights coming on to your left and grilled fish smoke drifting along the sand. It is the easiest sunset here: no stairs, no cliff, no climb. Come early if you want a table at the water line.

Minimum spend on the Uluwatu cliffs: why the front row costs money
One thing nobody tells you before the first evening: at most cliff venues here the good seats carry a minimum spend, and it applies exactly during the hour you came for.
It is not a scam and it is worth understanding. A table at the rail between five and seven is the scarcest thing these places own. Someone who takes it, orders one coffee and leaves at half past six costs them the whole evening on their best table, so they set a floor and sell the seat rather than the drink. Sit one row back and there is usually no floor at all.
The numbers we can confirm: La Terrazza publishes 250K per seat on its front deck between five and seven, and only on the front deck. Guests report 850K a head for the booked High Table sunset seating at El Kabron, and around 750K in some zones at Single Fin. Policies change and vary by zone, so ask when you book rather than when the bill arrives.
Two ways round it. Take a free clifftop instead: Karang Boma and Batu Jaran cost nothing and the view is arguably better. Or go north to Balangan, where the sunset comes over palms and rooftops rather than open water, nobody charges for a chair, and dinner is the reason you came rather than the price of the seat.

9. Single Fin – Uluwatu
The famous one, and it earns it about four days a week. Three levels cut into the cliff above Suluban with the whole break laid out below, and at six the entire deck stops talking. Sunday is a different venue: it becomes the island's biggest sunset party, and if you came for the view rather than the queue, come any other day. Open to ten. Book the terrace or take what is left. Guests report a minimum spend of around 750K in some zones, so ask which zone you are booking into.

Down the cliff on an inclined lift, at Ayana in Jimbaran. The bar sits on the rocks barely above the water, so the sun goes down at eye level rather than below you, and the swell breaks close enough to hear over the music. 13. El Kabron – Pecatu
The cliff-edge one where the food is Spanish and actually good. Paella and grilled things on a terrace hanging over the water at Pecatu, an infinity pool between you and the horizon, and a room that manages to be a destination without being only a photograph. Fourteen thousand people have rated it and it still holds 4.7, which on this coast is rare. Open to midnight. Book the sunset seating well ahead. Guests report a minimum spend of 850K a head for the booked High Table sunset experience, so settle that on the phone rather than at the table.

14. Mana – Uluwatu
Above Suluban, at the top of the steps. Open from seven in the morning and the reason people stay up there after a session rather than riding home wet. Smarter than the warungs below it, considerably calmer than Single Fin next door, and the terrace faces the same water. Serves until eleven, which makes it one of the few places here that is a sunset spot and a dinner both.

Italian on the cliff at Suluban, and the one that says out loud what the others only imply: their own line is that the ocean is the stage and the sunset is the show. The kitchen is not decoration either — the dough is slow-fermented and blended by an Italian chef, pizza from midday, a margherita at 110K and a vegan marinara at 80K, which on this clifftop is close to cheap. Live music Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from six, which is exactly when the light goes. The front deck carries a minimum spend of 250K per seat between five and seven, and only the front deck does: sit one row back and there is none. North of Bingin the peninsula empties out. There is still a cliff up here, there is simply nobody fighting you for the rail, and none of the three below charges you for the seat. This is also the answer to the eight o'clock problem: the Uluwatu kitchens close early and the road back fills with everyone who watched the same sun.
20. The View Restaurant – Balangan
The one that says it out loud: their own line is «the best sunset in Bali, served with a great meal». It sits on the Balangan cliff at the La Joya Biu Biu resort, above the beach and north of the Uluwatu strip, which is the whole point — it is a clifftop with an open horizon and a fraction of the crowd, four hundred ratings against El Kabron's fourteen thousand. The golden hour runs four to seven and they sell two classic cocktails for 280K through it. The kitchen is not an afterthought: the Ocean Feast is a whole fish with calamari, clams and prawns grilled in Balinese spices on a terracotta plate at 550K for one or two, the Biu Biu platter of rawon, betutu, rendang and satay is 490K for two, and a tuna tataki is 110K. Open seven in the morning to eleven at night. No minimum spend published anywhere, which on a cliff with this view is the unusual part. All prices are ++, so add tax and service.

21. Shaffa GastroBazar – Balangan
The sunset nobody queues for. Ten minutes north of Bingin the cliffs stop and the village starts, and from the upstairs terrace here the sun goes down behind palms and terracotta rooftops with the ocean as a long line far past them. It is not the cliff sunset and it does not pretend to be: it is quieter, nobody charges you for the chair and there is no minimum spend on any table, and the light turns the whole terrace orange at about six. What makes it worth the ride is that dinner is the reason to come and the sunset arrives on top: a wood-fired oven, a charcoal grill and a smoker, sourdough baked in the same kitchen, and slow-cooked plates that need the hours they take. Kitchen until ten Tuesday to Sunday, four on Mondays.

22. R Bar – Balangan
Three hundred and seventy metres from the last entry, and open until midnight. The bar off the lobby at the Renaissance on Jalan Pantai Balangan, with an open room, a breeze that never stops and the pool and the sea below it. It is a hotel bar and it does not hide that, but the space is genuinely handsome and it is almost empty at the hour when the cliffs are three deep at the rail. It is new: only fourteen people have rated it so far, so ours is close to a first opinion rather than a consensus.
